Growing the business

WhatsApp is where it starts, not where it ends

WhatsApp is the best place in the world to be reached and the worst place to run a business from. The messages arrive. The bookings, the money and the memory do not.

Almost every business we meet takes bookings on WhatsApp. It is free, everyone already has it, and a customer can reach you in four seconds. There is nothing wrong with any of that, and nobody should give it up.

The trouble starts later, and it is not the app’s fault. A conversation is not a record. It was never meant to be one.

What a conversation forgets

A thread runs in the order the messages arrived, not in the order of your day. So the Thursday that was quietly promised to two people stays quietly promised to two people until one of them walks in. "What time did we say?" costs a minute of scrolling every time somebody asks, and somebody asks every day.

And when a regular comes back after six months, the thing you needed to remember — what colour, what she reacted to, what she asked you not to do again — is four hundred messages up.

The messages that never get sent

The reminder the day before. The follow-up three months after a treatment. The note to the twenty people who loved that service last winter. These are the messages that quietly make the difference, and almost nobody sends them, because nobody is going to type two hundred messages by hand on a Tuesday night.

Money that is still a promise

A deposit agreed in a message is a promise. A deposit paid is a booking. The gap between those two things is every slot you have ever lost at nine the night before, and no amount of good faith closes it.

Keep WhatsApp. Put something behind it

None of this is an argument for being harder to reach. Your customer should still be able to message you, and most of them will. The change is what happens after they do: a link that books a real slot in a real diary, a deposit taken at that moment, a reminder that goes out whether or not you remember it, and a card for that customer that is still there in six months.

WhatsApp becomes the front door instead of the whole building — which is what it was always good at.

What changes

Fewer double bookings, fewer empty slots, and an hour of your evening back. You are still the person they message. You are just no longer the filing system.
